I can do all things - Mojo Monday 300

 

Super quick post today.  Lots going on, but I wanted to play along with Mojo Monday's 300th celebration so I whipped up this card using an older paper pad I have - My Mind's Eye Lost & Found Sunshine.  When in a crunch, let the paper companies do the work with you - all the papers coordinate so you don't have to go looking for matches. 

I stayed very true to the sketch, added some stitching details as well as some layers of vellum to soften some of the layers.

For all you keeping track, so far in the saga of rooming together it's a mixed bag.  We had to go in and tell them to pipe down about five times last night, and there was absolutely NO napping going on today.  Likely owing to the fact that they are dead tired from lack of sleep, they went right to bed tonight....a good precedent to set, but I'm hoping they sort out the no napping thing soon.

Mojo Monday 253

It's been a while since I played along with the Mojo Monday sketch, but I really liked this week's sketch, so I pulled out some more of my new papers and got to work.

I'm using the Dakota papers. I really like how they are so balanced and can be used for guys or girls.

I did a lot of distressing on the papers and stitching also.

The round seal stamp is from the Hero Arts Cheer Up set, and the 100% Genuine is from a new CTMH set called Rugged Dude.

Instead of using ribbon, I used one of the Dakota papers and created a paper bow.

Mojo Monday 227

I haven't played along with the Mojo Monday sketch in a while, but when I saw this week's I knew exactly which stamp set I was going to use.

I just love the notebook paper stamp that is part of Verve's Blue Skies set and thought it would be perfect here. When I stamped the image, I had a little bolt of lightening. CTMH's new Card Word Puzzle set has 57 words on it that you can use to create all sorts of phrases, and the words are exactly the right size for the notebook paper.

After that, the card just started to come together. The 'ribbon' is actually off-white grosgrain that I got from Michael's after Christmas. This is an idea that I got from Laurie Schmidlin, where you fray the ribbon to undo it. It was also a great way to use the grosgrain since it actually has a snowflake pattern on it. The pattern still shows up after you fray it, but it's much lighter and less distinct. I actually used the backside of the ribbon to soften it even further.

The oval and frame for the sentiment are cut using the Cricut Art Philosophy cartridge, and the papers are from Echo Park's Times and Seasons collection.

I used Twinery Denim twine on the large and medium buttons (for the medium ones just two strands), and off-white thread on the small ones. This is actually the most buttons I have ever used on a card, so I'm not quite sure if I overdid it or not.

This card is a little out of my comfort zone. It's a little more dimensional than I usually do, and the patterned paper on the bottom is a little busier than my norm, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Four in One Card

I have another card for you today. It's for my grandfather-in-law and I'm entering it into three challenges. I love it when things come together like that!

The Heart2Heart Challenge from three weeks ago was a die-cut challenge, a perfect way to practice with my new Cricut and AP cartridge; this week's Mojo Monday challenge is a sketch challenge featuring rectangles and squares; and this week's CAS-ual Fridays challenge is to use three shades of a monochromatic color plus brown.

I knew that I wanted to use some frames cut with the Cricut, and that easily lent itself to the Mojo Monday sketch challenge. Since I'm just getting used to the Cricut, I often end up thinking that the size I'm entering is the reverse of what I end up cutting, i.e. I enter 2" because I want the rectangle to be 2" tall, and instead it is 2" wide. This ended up working out well for this card since I ended up with a number of frames/shapes that I could layer until I got the look I wanted.

It's a simple card, and one you could easily make using scraps. For the two top frames, the Cricut shape I wanted to use originally didn't have the right dimensions, so I ended up just cutting the square and rectangle with the trimmer, and using a single hole punch to round the corners, a trick I saw just today here: http://danieladobson.blogspot.com/.

Mojo Monday with a Spin on the Magic Spinner

This is another spin on one of the Magic interactive elements. In Magic, which is a scrapbooking how-to book vice a card how-to book, the top element spins to reveal different pictures underneath (in the scrapbooking version there are three openings, so you can see three pictures at a time). I wanted to try this technique out, but my current scrapbooking projects don't lend themselves to this technique, so I decided to adapt it to a card.

Coincidentally, the Mojo Monday challenge for this week was really well suited to what I wanted to do, and only required a little bit of adjustment in sizing. This is a 6x6 card, so I used two of the Magic spinner templates, the 4 1/2" and 4". I adapted the top layer and only cut out one triangle shape. Also, since I wanted the bottom element to move, I ended up creating a bottom layer and used 3-D foam tape (only using it single sided) against the bottom of the middle circle to create some space so you could spin it. I did the same thing on the top layer putting the foam tape in the middle part of the circle. Then I stacked two very small pieces and stuck the top and bottom layers of the spinner together so that only the middle layer spins.

Because the spinner is pretty thick, and I'm very unorganized and couldn't locate my brads, I ended up using a button and hemp to secure it. This was a little bit tricky and had to be done before all the layers were secure.

I had a lot of fun creating the card and working with the Magic technique. This one was a LOT easier than the last one (filmstrip), and am already thinking of other possibilities/ideas that I could apply this to.
