What's the Matter?

Feeling SO much better, finally!  But SO behind! 

We've been  having a great time visiting with family, but as a result I haven't had much time to do any new non-DT creating, so I thought I would pop in and share this card that I created a while back.

Kind of appropriate for the crud that I was dealing with the last couple weeks too.

My card for you today features the Little Moments stamp set, which is designed by Torico and filled with all sorts of sweet images.  When I started stamping and making cards, I admired these these hand drawn 'people' images, but since I haven't been able to invest the time and money in learning to color, I didn't think these types of stamp sets were for me. 

I was wrong.  These are perfect for piecing....all you need to do to be able to piece is cut with scissors and have paper scraps, and we all fit that bill!  In fact, paper piecing is quickly becoming one of my very favorite techniques. 

I used a ton of different papers in piecing this, and they all came from my scrap bag.  The background papers are from the Dotty for You and Roxie collections.  The baseboard is a piece of Colonial White cardstock that I scored twice (although it's hard to see it in the pictures).  The frame is also cut from Colonial White cardstock.  I scored the corners and then very lightly brushed some Cocoa ink over the entire frame with a sponge.

A little May Arts Twine and a brad for a nail, and that was it.  I left the frame hanging free, so when you're handling the card there's quite a bit of movement, and I adhered the image using dimensional foam tape

Tuesday Morning Sketch #137 with TSG

Thought I would try out a new challenge (new for me at least) this week. The Tuesday Morning Sketch challenge is being sponsored by There She Goes stamps this week, and the cards need to be monochromatic.

I don't normally work/think in monochromatic, so I thought this would be a good stretch for me, but it ended up coming together much more quickly than I thought it would.

To simplify, I used one of the CTMH pre-cut cards as a base, so the card size is 4 1/4" x 5 1/2". I cut 10 1 1/8" squares of cardstock from American Crafts Hello Sunshine, Gossamer paper. I used the pattened side on the top and bottom rows, alternating the direction of the chevrons, and then the solid side of the paper for the two squares in the middle row.

For the image pieces, I cut two ovals from white cardstock using my CM custom cutting system. I used a sponge dauber with Desert Sand ink and then Chocolate ink to add color around the edges of the inside oval, carefully working the color in towards the center of the oval. Then I stamped just the top portion of one of the large image stamps from TSG's Little Moments stamp set. I also used the sponge dauber to add just a hint of definition on the edge of the outer oval.

The faux stitching is a stamp from the You & Me stamp set. I thought it kind of anchored the card a bit.

The twine is from the Twinery, and it's strung through some Designer Wooden Buttons. They are adhered to the card using liquid glass. I first threaded them through the small button, and used liquid glass to adhere. The threads of twine go around the inside of the card and then are threaded through the larger button. Once I had the tension right, I adhered the button with liquid glass. Once it had dried, I tied the bow.





I had a good time making this card, and will definitely be playing along over at Tuesday Morning Sketches again.

TSG Animal Theme Card

Just getting this card in under the wire. This is for this week's TSG challenge which is to create a project with an animal theme. It's also my first time playing along with them.

I'm using TSG's Little Moments stamp set which I was fortunate enough to win a couple months back. The images are so sweet, and even though I'm not a cat fan, I think this one is awfully cute.

I deliberated over the composition for a while. Part of me thinks that it's too stark, but another part of me loves the simplicity of it.

To create the lighting effect, I used a scrap piece of cardstock, and lined it up along the edge of the shade. I used a sponge dauber to add ink along the edge of the scrap piece of paper, shading from the scrap piece in, and from the bottom of the shade down. For the light beams at the top of the shade, I just estimated where I thought the angle should be, and did the same thing. It's a really easy technique that adds a lot to the image.

The papers for the cat and lamp shade are from the retired Dreamin' paper pack and the 'carpet' pieces are from the Stella paper pack.

Another little tip for piecing. Since I overlapped the base of the lamp with the cat image, I added a small piece of cardstock to the back of the cat so that the image sits evenly on the card. The small piece of cardstock doesn't need to match the cat exactly, it's just there for some added stability and to make sure that when you adhere the top piece it doesn't look uneven.
