Mixing Up My Card Game, Verve & C9

A while ago (August!) I created my own personal challenge.  I cut up a bunch of little pieces of paper, wrote the name of a stamp company on each, threw them into a cup and pulled three out randomly.  The challenge was to create a card using products from those companies.  It was a lot of fun and I fully intended to make it a regular occurrence, but here we are almost three months later and I'm just getting around to it again.

This time I picked Verve, Concord and 9th, and Tim Holtz.  You'll notice that I only managed to use products from two of those companies on this card.  I had a plan to incorporate some TH, but when I was creating the card, I liked this panel so much, I decided that since I'm in charge of the challenge, I could make an executive decision to go with just two.

Such a simple and easy card.  I cut a panel of dark blue cardstock, and stamped it with the snowflakes from the C9 Snowflakes Turnabout.  I love Turnabouts, but for this card, didn't use it as designed.  I placed the turnabout in my MISTI and moved the panel around to create a clean and simple background.  The snowflakes were stamped with white pigment ink.

Once I was happy with the background panel, I heat set the ink, and then stamped and embossed the Verve sentiment.

I just love the simplicity of the card.  I think the sentiment and those snowflakes play perfectly with one another.  While I didn't follow my challenge to a tee, it was nice to pull out some older items and do a bit of out of the box thinking.

I'm still planning to do this more often, hopefully it won't be three months before I get around to it again!

End of Year Cards for Teachers

I know a lot of you are already done with school, but we're not out until tomorrow!  It's been especially wild and crazy around here with end of school events since Ellie graduates from elementary school this year.  Her 'promotion ceremony' was yesterday evening.

Anyway, I needed some cards to go with gifts for our teachers.  I love the images from Waffle Flower's Pencil In set, but the sentiments in the set are on the smallish side, and just didn't convey how grateful we are for our teachers this year.  We really lucked out, they were the perfect teachers for our girls!

I pulled out this older set from Verve (which sadly is closing it's doors at the end of this month - I think pretty much all their inventory is gone, but it's worth a look-see as everything had been discounted 55% last I looked).  I just love the sentiments in this set and they paired perfectly with the Waffle Flower images.

This first card was super simple.  Just some simple Copic coloring on the little girl and boy, stamped sentiment, patterned paper mat, and done.

I wet a little more complicated for the second card.  I stamped the images from the Pencil In set in the center of my panel and colored them with Copics.

The sentiment from the Verve set was added above, and then I used a number stamp from the Verve set and Versamark ink to create some tone on tone patterned paper for the bottom panel.  

A thin strip of black cardstock finished things off.

Now I just need to write in these cards and wrap up the teacher gifts and tomorrow we'll officially be on summer break!  (And by we, I mean the kids and Andrew (who is a teacher) because, sadly, I still have to work.)

Waffle Flower Clear Stamps, Pencil In

Signing off for the week!

I'm signing off of the blog for the rest of the week.  We'll be seeing both sides of the family, and spending lots of time relaxing and testing out Christmas loot.

I thought this card was appropriate for this time of year.  I always have lots of big plans for the holidays.  Invariably there are things that fall through the cracks, and don't get done.  Kids (or really anyone) might not react/behave in that magical manner they are supposed to at Christmastime, so if you're feeling a little on edge today because stuff is not getting done, this card is for you.

It's one of my favorite Verve Plain Janes, and I used a two step stencil by Julie Balzer from The Crafter's Workshop.  The solid image was blended in with a couple ink colors and then I used Dreamweaver's Gold Paste on the outline portion.



Have a wonderful Christmas, and remember to give yourself some grace this season....it is after all the crux of the holiday isn't it?

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room

Another quick Christmas card duo today.



I just let the watercoloring do the work on these.  I used my Kuretake watercolors, wet the paper first and added two colors, blending them together in the middle (I did speed this along with a heat gun), and then stamping the sentiment in Versafine.



These are so easy to create...I'm still a few cards short, so I'm thinking I might have to whip up a few more of these.

Christmas cards with basic/minimal supplies

In breaking up the Christmas card making tedium, I thought I would try coming up a couple cards using limited supplies.

I pulled a few Elle's Studio papers and basic punches and went to work.  The triangles on the tree card and the tree trunk were just free hand cut.  I added some black doodled lines to the triangles as well as the red polka dot panel.  The sentiment piece is a scrap.  I used the corner of a square punch to cut the ends and stamped a Verve sentiment.  A few sequins finished it off.

For the wreath card, I punched two sizes of circles from the same green papers and did the doodle thing on the circles and panel again.  The alphas were just freehand cut from black cardstock and I added a simple bow to the wreath.

Sometimes it's just fun to play a little and see what you can create with limited supplies.  These were so easy to do, and definitely kid-friendly too.

Verve December Diva Dare - Favorite Things

Thought I would play along with this month's Diva Dare at Verve.  The challenge was to share our favorite Verve creations from the past year or create a new card with our favorite set.

I decided to create a new card.  I'm using my current favorite set, the Poppy Birthday stamps and Build a Poppy dies.

I wanted the poppies to really be the focus, but I also wanted to try a fun technique.  I die cut a bunch of the poppies and then stamped them with Festive Berries distress ink.  Then I flicked water over the poppies to create some texture.  Once they were dry, I stamped the black outlines.



Then it was just a matter of placement and adding some foam adhesive for dimension.  A few of the leaves from the set were stamped as accents and I added a thin strip of black at the top of the card to balance things out.

Watercolor + Font Focus for Verve

I created the soft and subtle background for this card using the technique Aga demonstrated in the Watercolor for Cardmakers class.

I thought I would use it, combined with the watercolor technique demonstrated here to create a card for Verve's Font Focus challenge.



The challenge is to make the sentiment(s) the focus of your card, so I went very clean and simple.  Once my background (created with Inktense pencils) was completely dry, I inked up my stamp with a variety of Distress Inks and stamped on the panel.  Then I misted it with water so it bled a little, used a heat gun to speed up with drying, inked up the sentiment again with Versafine and stamped over the original.

Really quick and easy, but the verse definitely shines here.  I added a little sheer ribbon and rounded a couple of the corners to add some extra interest.

Teachers Count for Verve Diva Dare

Thought I would play along with this month's Verve Diva Dare - Let's Polka today.

I got the Teachers Count set a while back and hadn't gotten to ink it up until now.  The papers are from Simple Stories Snap Life 6x6 pad.  I thought of these papers right away because of the polka dots, then I chose one of the ruled papers to fit the school theme.  I trimmed around the tap and then layered it over another piece of the ruled paper.

I struggled a little in terms of stamping the sentiment.  Couldn't decide if I should stamp it on an angle to line up with the lines of the paper, but decided to keep it square to the card.  The apples are also from the set.  I have the matching dies, but I can't find them (which is no real surprise in my mess of a craft room), so I just fussy cut them.

Pretty quick and easy, and I'll tuck this one away to go with one of our end of school year teacher gifts.

The Best Grandparents

Another late night post from me.

I thought I would play along with a few challenges that are ending soon - Verve's February Diva Dare, Viva La Verve, and Glitz's February challenge (pink and gold).

The sketch is from the first Viva La Verve sketch of the month.  I really loved the modern feel of the sketch and the play of squares/rectangles and circles.



I used papers from Glitz's Uncharted Waters collection and a Plain Jane sentiment that I had sadly not yet inked up.  The Diva Dare this month is to make a 'perk up' card.  I don't have any Verve coffee stamps, but plenty of encouraging/pick me up sentiments.  I think this is such a great sentiment, and will surely make an appearance on some Grandparent's Day cards.

With a gold challenge, you have to pull out the Gold Delicata, no?  The stripes were created using the thinnest strip from Neat & Tangled's On the Strip 2 set.

I played around with some different mats for the sentiment piece, but ultimately decided on some vellum because I wanted something really subtle.

Finally, I finished it off with some gold sequins, because sequins make everything better right?

One Day at a Time - For Verve Diva Dare

Hey everyone, Happy Christmas Eve!

The Diva Dare at Verve this month is to create a card using your favorite Verve Stamp set.

It is very hard for me to pick favorites, but I have to say that my favorite kind of stamp from Verve would have to be the Plain Jane.  They are inexpensive, there are so many great verses/sentiments, and I love the fonts that they come in too.

I'm using one of my favorite PJs today on this mixed media card.

The front panel is mixed media paper.  I masked off one of the feathers from Ronda Palazzari's  The Crafter's Workshop Fancy Feathers 6x6 stencil and painted it using Distress Paint that I squeezed/dabbed out onto a plastic plate.

I added some splatter using the distress paint as well as Heidi Swapp Gold Lame Color Shine.  I also (once everything was dry) brushed Gold Lame paint over the center portion of the card and directly onto the feather sections.



The sentiment was stamped using Archival Ink.

Some Gold Twinery Twine and May Arts Burlap String finished it off.

Silent Night

Can you believe that it's just over a month to Christmas?

I have SO MUCH to do!

Just wanted to pop in and share a Christmas card with you today.

This one was fun because it is kind of unexpected, at least I think.  When I looked at this background it reminded me of rays of light, kind of like Van Gogh's Starry Starry Night painting.  I used a sponge dauber and sponge tool to add Sunkiss Yellow and Outdoor Denim ink to my which Cardstock panel.  Then I stamped the background stamp in Outdoor Denim. 

The sentiment was embossed with in white and I carefully added a very pale yellow to it with a Spectrum Noir marker.

The entire panel is then popped out with foam tape. 

I really love this one, and was thinking about using it for our Christmas cards this year, but with all the sponging it is a rather labor intensive card, so I decided against it.

Peace on Earth for Verve Diva Dare and Simon Says

Playing along with this month's Diva Dare today.  The challenge this month is to incorporate a tag into your project.  I decided to keep this one very clean and simple, and also went with a 'use your stash' mentality.

My tag is one of many that I have pre-cut using the Cricut Art Philosophy cartridge.  Since I don't have space to have all my machines out and available all the time, when I cut one, I tend to cut a whole sheet, and then I have a stack handy and don't have to pull the Cricut out every time I want a tag.

The papers are from last year's Fancy Pants Home for Christmas collection, and the sentiment is from Verve's Peace on Earth set.

The gems are old - MME Merry and Bright, and the grosgrain that peeks out beneath the sentiment piece is CTMH Cranberry Grosgrain (also old).  It's hard to tell from the photo, but that blue piece is actually popped up off the tag for some extra dimension.

So there you have it, a very CAS new, but old card.

Because I love you for Verve Diva Dare

 
Popping in to share a quick and easy card for the current Verve Diva Dare.  This month the theme is Tic Tac Toe.  I used a little grid made from the envelope stamps from the Take Note set, the Xs and Os are from one of my Lawn Fawn alphas.

The sentiment is also from the Take Note set and it's embossed with my new Stampendous Detail White embossing powder.  I've been on the hunt for the perfect white embossing powder - my pet peeve has been that the ones I have look more off-white, and I think I may have found the one!

I fussy cut the envelopes and mounted them with foam tape and then added a little bit of coral trim that I had in my scrap bin.

The most room in your heart for August Verve Diva Dare

Here's my card for this month's Verve Diva Dare:  Pile on the Sweetness.  We're supposed to create a card with lots of layers.

I went ultra girly here with lots and lots of pink.  Most of the papers are from Glitz's Hello Friend collection, although the bottom layer of paper and the mats are MME. 

The sentiment is one of my newest Verve Plain Janes that I picked up during the current sale (everything in the store is on sale right now!).  And the little stamped hearts are from the Take Note stamp set.

That gorgeous seam binding is from my friend Debbie's Paper Sweeties store.

Lots of layers, and some experimental stitching too.  I thought it would be fun to try the cross stitch stitch that I have on my fancy sewing machine.  I really like it, and I'll definitely be using that stitch again.

I used another of my Punky Sprouts buttons on this card, just love those!

July Diva Dare

Just a quick post to share my card for this month's Verve Diva Dare.  This month's Dare was to use an inspirational sentiment as well as distressing or a shabby chic element.

I have to say I'm not the greatest when it comes to shabby chic, and I'm not sure that I necessarily achieved that here, but I did distress the heck out of my papers and this is a pretty inspirational verse, don't you think?

I had a lot of fun creating this card.  I love mixing and matching papers, but when I am trying to get a card done in a hurry, the easiest thing to do is just grab a 6x6 pad and let the paper companies do the work for me.  For this card I'm using Glitz's Yours Truly collection.

I decided to go with a really symmetrical, centered look.  All the pieces are distressed, and lots of stitching too.  I like that it came out a little patriotic, and a little nautical.

OK, that's all for me now.  I'm supposed to be making cards for the PC call, but all I feel like doing is layouts.  I think I'm going to go with my gut on this one since I've been slacking on the scrapbooking.

Super quick post today.  Lots going on, but I wanted to play along with Mojo Monday's 300th celebration so I whipped up this card using an older paper pad I have - My Mind's Eye Lost & Found Sunshine.  When in a crunch, let the paper companies do the work with you - all the papers coordinate so you don't have to go looking for matches. 

I stayed very true to the sketch, added some stitching details as well as some layers of vellum to soften some of the layers.

For all you keeping track, so far in the saga of rooming together it's a mixed bag.  We had to go in and tell them to pipe down about five times last night, and there was absolutely NO napping going on today.  Likely owing to the fact that they are dead tired from lack of sleep, they went right to bed tonight....a good precedent to set, but I'm hoping they sort out the no napping thing soon.

Verve June Diva Dare

Hey everyone!  Sliding in a card under the wire for this month's Verve Diva Dare.  The challenge this month was to create a card using coloring/paint and as an extra challenge to include kraft cardstock.

This was a fun, fun card to make, and I got to use some of my new goodies:  the peacock feather stencil from The Crafter's Workshop and some Liquitex Modeling Paste.

I first added the feathers using modeling paste.  Once that was dry I added color using Salty Ocean Distress Ink.  I used a wet brush to moisten the areas I wanted to color, then I used a waterbrush to pick up the color and apply it.  I wanted to keep the feathers pretty light, so when I was adding the color, I went right behind with a paper towel to pull color off of the modeling paste.

After that it was just adding the embossed sentiment and mounting the panel to the card base.  Really simple in terms of steps although necessarily lightning quick because you have to wait for stuff to dry.

First Publication!

Late last year I got that email that I had been hoping to receive for months:  my first publication acceptance.




It was from Paige Evans at Cards, and here is my card in print in the May issue!

I created the flower element by layering a Punky Sprouts doily, with four Punky Sprouts Lil' Parchment Blossoms that were folded into quarters with one edge folded back, a crocheted flower, Teresa Collins button, and Twinery Twine.

The sentiment is one of my favorite Verve Plain Janes, and the patterned paper is from GCD Studios.

I'm very happy to report that I have a number of other cards that will be published this year, but the first one will always have a special place in my heart.

Verve May Diva Dare

It's been quiet over here.  I'm working away on some projects that I can't share yet, and I'm recovering from scrapbooking overload associated with NSD, but I thought I would play along with this month's Verve Diva Dare.

This month the dare pays tribute to Amber Hight and Laurie Willson.  The challenge is to combine stars and stripes, and if you are up to it (although not required), create a CAS card.

I pulled out my Little Star Plain Jane, as well as some Fancy Pants Country Boutique papers (these came in the Simon Says Stamp October 2012 Card Kit).  A really quick and easy card to put together.  Those Studio Calico wood veneer stars were the perfect size to incorporate into the sentiment.

Verve April Diva Dare

So last month I attempted to play along with the Verve Diva Dare and managed to get my dates mixed up so I wasn't able to get my card linked up in time.  Not this month!  And, since it's Anything Goes week at Simon Says Stamp, I get to link up over there too.

This month the dare is to combine the styles of Marisa and Charmaine with a "Bright Blooms and Butterflies" theme.

I'm not sure if I quite nailed the bright blooms part.  I realized that I only actually have one flower image from Verve (from the Wonderfully Made set), which I had used on my last card so I wanted to mix things up a bit.  I still used the flower, but just the very center portion.  I stamped it several times and then fussy cut the centers out, layering them on top of some fancy black trim from Hydrangea Hippo.  I had a bit of fun creating the curved edge too.

The sentiment and butterflies are from the Blue Skies set.  I used a blending pen to add just a bit of color to the butterflies as well as the center of the flowers.

I'm SO happy it's the weekend!  You might have noticed that until yesterday I hadn't posted in about a week....I think that's the longest layoff I've had since I started blogging!  Combination of illnesses, and working on submissions/DT projects, but hopefully we are back to normal here!
